Godfrey-Smith" Comments: To: lcbmchap@REUNA.CL Dear Luis, In addition to the TL labs in the US, there are two in eastern Canada: here at Dalhousie, and at UQAM (Universite du Quebec a Montreal). In my experience, classic TL is excellent for dating fired materials (ceramics and well heated hearths), but the dating of unfired materials from either geological or archaeological contexts is better accomplished using optical dating (optically stimulated luminescence). Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, do write. The good news is that it has been diagnosed as squamous-cell cancer, the slowest-growing form, but at this point it is unknown whether surgery alone will be sufficient or whether additional therapy will be necessary. The cancer was diagnosed only last week, and of course it has been a shock to all of us here. But Renee is in good spirits--those of you who know her know how resilient she is-- and I'm sure she would appreciate receiving expressions of support from everyone beforehand. (Email or fax would be preferable; as you might guess, she has been very busy on the telephone recently.) If you want to mail any cards or other tokens, please send them to her c/o RADIOCARBON at the address below, and I'll see that they are delivered. If you want to receive an e-mail message about the success of the surgery, please send me a note at c14@packrat.aml.arizona.edu; I won't post anything else directly to the C14-L list. You can also telephone the office next week at the number below. I know that there will be a lot of people wishing her the best from Arizona to Siberia and everywhere in between.
