Time is of the essence. Thank you, Bob Andrews Subject: CHALK RIVER'S TASCC FACILITY SHUTDOWN. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! URGENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The purpose of this letter is to ask for your help. Chalk River's Tandem Accelerator Superconducting Cyclotron (TASCC) facility WILL SHUTDOWN unless other sources of funds are identified soon. As a result of budget cuts and the narrowing of Atomic Energy of Canada's (AECL's) focus to the CANDU reactor business, BASIC RESEARCH AT CHALK RIVER WILL NO LONGER BE FUNDED BY AECL. This is not the result of peer review, which has always rated TASCC highly, but follows entirely from closed discussions among government officials. TASCC is a premier research laboratory, one of Canada's most important contributions to the international pool of major scientific facilities, and the principal part of Canada's national nuclear science infrastructure. This recently commissioned versatile heavy-ion accelerator, hosts internationally-respected programs in basic science and graduate education, with applied programs in aerospace, materials and environmental sciences, as well as nuclear technology and safeguards. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! URGENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Money has been raised to pay for an Open Letter in Canada's national newspaper, the Globe and Mail, to urge the government to find ways of allowing TASCC to continue operation. Without support we will lose our staff and a major Canadian infrastructure facility, worth about 70M$ of taxpayers' money, will be written off. We have lobbied the government for support - thus far to no avail. WHAT YOU CAN DO: ________________ 1) We are seeking for as large and wide international representation as we can get. If you are willing to be a signatory to the Open Letter enclosed below please let us know by e-mail - (HLPTASCC@CU48.CRL.AECL.CA or URIBARRIA@CRL.AECL.CA) or by FAX (613 584 1800) giving your name, title and affiliation as it should appear on the list. This is the most important thing that you can do to help. Please do it immediately using the format shown below to facilitate automatic sorting of replies: Name: Alfredo Galindo-Uribarri Title: Research Scientist Affiliation: TASCC Facility Country: Canada PLEASE DO NOT USE THE MAIL REPLY COMMAND TO RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE! 2) You can also help by sending a brief message in support of TASCC to: Minister of Finance, the Hon. Paul Martin (FAX 613-995-5176) the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Jean Chretien (FAX 613-941-6900) and the Minister of Industry, the Hon. John Manley (email: manley.john@ic.gc.ca) The message might emphasize the impact such high-profile cuts can have on Canada's international image; the need for all countries to contribute to international science; and the importance of basic and applied research in developing a competitive economy. It might conclude by urging the government to find ways of allowing this premier facility to continue operation. Thank you very much for your support and remember that time is of the essence. Sincerely Dr. A. Galindo-Uribarri for the TASCC Scientists and Staff Chalk River Laboratories Chalk River, Ontario K0J 1J0, Canada P.S. Further information can be found on the TASCC users homepage on the World Wide Web (http://www.physics.mcmaster.ca/TASCC/) P.P.S. A number of mailing lists are being used so you may be contacted more than once. OPEN LETTER TO THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA ___________________________________________ (An Urgent Appeal to the Prime Minister and the Government of Canada Concerning the TASCC Facility which is located at Chalk River) The undersigned, are national and international scientists and members of the public from more than (30) countries, concerned for the future of TASCC, Canada's only heavy-ion research facility. We understand that TASCC has been funded by Natural Resources Canada through its Crown corporation AECL. AECL is now concentrating on the CANDU reactor business and all of AECL's basic research activities will be terminated unless alternative sources of funding can be found soon. We urge the Canadian Government to find ways of allowing this premier facility to continue operation. Please stop the otherwise irreversible destruction of a very valuable Canadian asset. ___________________________________________________________________________ ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 7 Aug 1996 15:12:13 -0700 Reply-To: Radiocarbon Mailing List Sender: Radiocarbon Mailing List From: David Sewell Subject: Call for Radiocarbon Updates MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit The next issue of RADIOCARBON should be going to press next week.
