I am attempting to correlate the cultural history of two northern Oregon coast estuaries with the earthquake history of that area. In particular, I am trying to determine the timing of occupation at several sites in relation to the AD 1700 Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. This will entail radiocarbon dating rapidly buried estuarine grasses and trees, along with the dating of archaeological material-probably charred twigs and/or charcoal. Can anyone recommend an affordable lab to carry out these assays? Also, what is the standard amount of carbon-bearing material needed for this dating procedure? Any help will be greatly appreciated. The cost is 50% markup on the normal price of $ 180, viz. $ 270 per sample with a possible reduction for larger numbers of samples. There is , however, a problem with the calibration of dates at AD 1700 and it just so happens that shells from the open ocean could give a more precise date, or better a pair of shell plus land plants. A number of the sites are in plowed agricultural fields. Lately, we have been wondering whether the use of fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides poses any contamination problems. Practices may be somewhat different on Mexican versus Menonite lands but they all seem to make heavy use of fertilizers (we don't know exactly what now but could investigate next summer). Basically he's trying to decide whether they should keep a large collection of radiocarbon date information stored on computer punch cards that had been at the Peabody Museum. The IRDB project is of course defunct, so the main question is whether this particular archive is of enough importance to preserve. If it consists only of data that was keyed in from early issues of RADIOCARBON then it probably isn't, because we have the option (assuming funding) of compiling a comprehensive database via optical scanning. [LONG] A query for the list. Tozzer Library has noticed in the back of a storeroom that we have the "Radiocarbon Card File," a large set of key-sort (edge-punched) eye-readable information. There are 17 cardboard cases of these 5"x8" cards. The cards are classified geographically (by longitude/latitude!) and contain, each, a date and supporting information: artificat, site, date, method of C-14 dating used, site description and significance, and source of data. The last appears to be references to published information, tho' without digging deeper I can't swear there is no original publication of data in this format. In sum, it appears to be a manual database tracking published dates. The publisher is "Radiocarbon Dates Association, Inc." The current ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ASSOCIATIONS does not have an entry for this. There are two relevant RLIN records. One is a CONSER record for the file itself. It locates the publisher as in Andover, MA. The notes read "In cases. Kept up to date by periodical additions and revisions. A manual for the utlization of edge-punched cards in the Radiocarbon card file." There is also an RLIN record, also under R...D...A...Inc as author, for "A Manual for the utilization of edge-punched cards in the radiocarbon card file. 1st and preliminary ed. ...1959." We don't seem to have this; the RLIN record shows it as held by Penn State and by the Linda Hall Library in Kansas City. There is no reference to this in Dilette Polach's RADICARBON DATING LITERATURE: THE FIRST 21 YEARS, 1947-1968. (Academic Press, 1988.) Nor is it mentioned in Edward S. Deevey et al, RADIOCARBON MEASUREMENTS: COMPREHENSIVE INDEX, 1950-1965. (Yale, 1967.) None of the guides to anthro bibliography include it, either. The file is mentioned in Renee Kra's "Updating the Past: the Establishment of the International Radiocarbon Database." AMERICAN ANTIQUITY, 53(1): 118-125, 1988. Kra notes that John Ramsden of Radiocarbon Dates Association, Inc, (RDA) transferred data from [the journal] RADIOCARBON to edgepunched cards and distributed information by subscription or by individual requests. Because the service was not publicized widely, Ramsden [in letters to the journal] initiated a liaison with RADIOCARBON to investigate the possibility of...a retrieval system for...dates. ... The editors decided against undertaking this venture. (p120) Kra was then in New Haven, where Yale had spun off, HRAF-like, IRDB, to try to put such an electronic resource together; she is now at Arizona, as managing editor of RADIOCARBON and head of IDRB. The 1988 article states flatly that "[t]here is no central index or authoritative index to consult in conducting an archaeometric investigation." (p188) Also, "No meaningful index of dates has been published."(p.189) I will contact Kra, but am interested in whether any ANSS folk are familiar with this resource and/or have views on its utility today. Has it been retrospectively converted into an electronic resource, or have the original published citations put onto the edge-punched cards been recon'ed?? The files are not cataloged at Tozzer, and show no marks of ever having been. My guess is that someone in the museum or the dept. dumped them on us at some point in the past and the cards were put out of sight and mind in the storeroom. Should we keep all 17 cases?
