M. Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometer, to be installed in May 2002. The successful applicant will initially assist in the commissioning of the spectrometer and associated sample preparation laboratory. In the longer term, the primary emphasis will be to assist in accelerator operations and upgrading, and/or to oversee sample preparation activities, depending on the interests of the applicant. Applicants should have an M.S. or higher degree in Physics, Chemistry or Earth Science, or equivalent experience. Experience in AMS sample preparation and spectrometer operation and familiarity with carbon cycle research and radiocarbon methods is desired. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, based on University of California salary scales. Initial funding is for 2 years, but it is anticipated that this will be a permanent position. A curriculum vitae including names and contact information for three references should be sent to Ellen Druffel or Sue Trumbore, Dept of Earth System Science, U.C. Irvine, Irvine, CA 92697-3100; email edruffel@uci.edu, setrumbo@uci.edu. The University of California, Irvine is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through diversity. Review will begin on November 17, 2001 and continue until position is filled. -- Susan Trumbore Dept. of Earth System Science University of California Irvine, CA 92697-3100 Phone: (949) 824-6142 Fax: (949) 824-3256 Email: setrumbo@uci.edu =========================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send the command SIGNOFF C14-L to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.ARIZONA.EDU, or send a request to C14-L-request@LISTSERV.ARIZONA.EDU. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 17:17:52 -0500 Reply-To: Radiocarbon Mailing List Sender: Radiocarbon Mailing List From: "Ann P. Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Investigator position at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. This position is funded by a NSF cooperative agreement. It is a one-year term position, renewable up to a maximum of three years, and is available starting January 1, 2002. The individual appointed will play a key role in the development of new techniques of accelerator mass spectrometry and their application to problems in the oceanic and environmental sciences. More specifically, the facility is developing an ion source that will allow continuous monitoring of levels of carbon-14 in flowing streams of gas. Successful completion of this development will facilitate diverse and important new investigations bearing on the global carbon cycle and on studies of the fates of environmental pollutants. The ideal applicant would be an experimental physicist with a recent Ph.D. and interests in ocean science, in geoscience, or in environmental chemistry. Individuals with a doctoral degree in chemistry or geochemistry and with relevant interests and aptitudes are also encouraged to apply. Desirable but not vital experience would include electron-cyclotron resonance and microwave techniques, ion-beam optics, ion extraction from plasma, vacuum, gas chromatography, isotope-ratio mass spectrometery, and high-voltage techniques. Archaeological confirmation of this important lesson is the theme of the video, Ancient Fires at Cliff Palace Pond, the latest offering on The Archaeology Channel, our public-education streaming-media website (www.archaeologychannel.org). This intriguing subject further demonstrates the relevance of archaeology in today's world. Ancient Fires documents how two sciences, archaeology and paleoecology, came together in a research project that confirmed archaeologist's ideas about the changing land use patterns of the First Americans along the western edge of the Appalachian Mountains. Archaeologist Cecil Ison takes viewers to a spectacular site on the Daniel Boone National Forest where soil core studies show how Native Americans used fire to manage the environment for over 3,000 years, in the process changing the forest composition to the array of species we have today. This understanding of ancient practices links us to the people who came before and will help guide forest management for the future. This and other programs are available on TAC for your use and enjoyment. If you feel that this project is a worthy endeavor, please participate in the Membership and Underwriting programs described on our website at www.archaeologychannel.org. Your help will allow us to continue and enhance this nonprofit public-education service. We also welcome new content partners as we reach out to the world community.
