It seems to me, that being located in the middle of radiocarbon plateau, there should be more Younger Dryas age middens than in other periods. That is, assuming a constant rate of midden deposition, say 100 middens/1000 calendar years (10 middens per century), these should be over-represented on a C14 scale. That is, since 1000 calendar years on the radiocarbon plateau may only translate to only ~700 radiocarbon years, then you should find 100 middens dating to this 700 year C14 period giving you a apparent deposition rate of 100 middens/700 radiocarbon years (14.2 middens per century). Or would the radiocarbon plateau force the opposite effect? That is, generate such a large dating uncertainties as to force early Younger Dryas and late Younger Dryas middens off either end? This seems less logical to me. Regardless of the above; the numbers for midden deposition (out of 2128 records) are: 1300 year period prior to the YD - about 14.2 to 12.9 ka 146 middens 1300 year period during YD - about 12.9 to 11.6 ka 103 middens 1300 year period following the YD - about 11.6 to 10.3 ka 140 middens Could this be interpreted to mean that packrats were feeling poorly during the Younger Dryas? Or is this just a complication brought about by the radiocarbon plateau? Any relevant references would certainly be welcome. Thanks, Ken Cole ****************************************** Kenneth L.
