Such modes can be defined as a set of fossil occurrences that result from similar depositiona l}{\cf2 , }{ physical, chemical, and biological processes. Consequently, shells are one of the most commonly dated radiocarbon sample types within this region. However, the interpretation of shell dates is encumbered by variability in the surface ocean marine 14C reservoir, both regionally and over time, and by uncertainties with the reliability of some species due to habitat and dietary preferences. The modelled marine calibration curve and its associated regional offsets (known as } {\f35\fs21\lang1033\langfe1033\langnp1033 \'c4}{R) originally constructed by Stuiver and others in 1986, has been widely accepted as the most accurate method for calibrating surface marine 14C dates. However, GIS is also a useful tool for revisiting old excavations and histor ical sources with new questions. There are large data sets from previous excavations, published and unpublished, whose digitisation and spatial mapping can facilitate investigations of social behaviour and changing environmental conditions. Added to that, there are also archives of historical maps and plans whose digitisation and combination with other archaeological data give greater insights into past human behaviour. This session will include papers from a number of projects, working in different parts o f the world, that are using this 'legacy data' to answer specific questions concerned with the social use of space (e.g. urban and military), vegetational change, or language distribution. The papers will discuss the relevance of spatial mapping to the pa r ticular aims of these projects and the approaches taken to synthesize and analyse these large datasets to reach these aims.
